This is the second of two paintings designed to go side by side. It’s of Cosy Corner beach near Augusta in the South West of Western Australia.

In both of the works I was interested in the transition of colours from the foam on the beach through to the midground and background.

Here you can see the Yellow Ochre of the sand mixed with the surf foam in the foreground, transitioning into a Viridian Green as the water in the nearshore becomes clear.

Beyond that, the colour moves to a dark blue Ultramarine, as the angle of light is now reflecting the sky more than penetrating the water.

And then the chunky shapes of the rock in the nearshore ocean and beyond.

To the right of a canvas, you can see the shoreline rocks, and actually just off the edge of the reference photo was a beach-side cave.

To be fair it’s not much of a cave and it didn’t add to the composition, but it’s still an interesting feature of the location – particularly for curious kids.

The family spent the day on the beach. A bit of fishing, a bit of swimming, a bit of exploring, a bit of just lying there in reading a book.

Amazingly, as I recall for the whole day we had the entire beach to ourselves. What a magical memory.
