Story Bridge

$398.00 AUD

This was taken from the middle of the street on The Story Bridge Brisbane Sunday, 11 July 2021 and its normally PACKED with thousands of cars! But in this photo, it’s absolutely deserted.
Here’s the story….
I’ve wanted to take this picture for many years, it’s been an absolute dream of mine since living in Queensland. I’ve gone up to Brisbane so many times, but never got the image I wanted, because there are always hundreds of cars, trucks, pedestrians and motorbikes. It’s impossible to stand in the middle of the bridge and get the shot with no cars. I’ve tried many times. However, during the Tour De Brisbane,… there was a chance.
So I hopped in my car in Broadbeach at 4:30am and drove to Brisbane arriving at 5:30am As soon as I got to Brisbane, my face fell with despair, to a police officer turning everyone away from the bridge with his red flash light and signs “bridge closed”.

I was hopeful to get a view that no one else had ever captured!
My heart pounded in my chest, I could sense the adventure as I drove up to the policeman and put my window down. The place was cold, dark and deserted.

My photographic opportunity appeared completely blocked! I knew I would kick myself forever if I didn’t pluck up the courage to go ask him.
I took an anxious, deep breath and drove up to the Police Officer. It was now or never. I asked the officer: “Can you tell me where to park as I am taking photos this morning?” To my amazement he moved a barrier and guided me to park safely in a side street.
I got my camera and drone out and, still unable to believe my good fortune, started the 800m walk onto the EMPTY Story Bridge, I couldn’t believe it. I can still recall the weird feeling of walking onto the bridge listening to the silence be interrupted by birds chirping with the sun’s rising glow in the East. It was a long eerie walk. Never knowing if I was going to be arrested or have police chase me with sirens and lights flashing.
I then set up my photography equipment, in the middle of the longest cantilever bridge in Australia. Three men died during the construction of The Story Bridge which opened in 1940. On a normal day this would block 6 lanes of traffic and I’d be immediately run over in multiple directions by oncoming traffic.
Now, it was as empty as a Ghost Town.
